This publication
lists "community voices" or spokespersons associated with nonprofit
grassroots organizations who have expertise in a diversity of neighborhood
issues. The purpose of this project is to provide media exposure for many unheralded, dedicated individuals who strive daily to solve critical issues within their neighborhoods. In addition, Community Voices seeks to increase public awareness of these societal problems and to encourage community service as a part of the solution. The Howard R. Swearer Center for Public Service works to establish community participation, activism, and civic responsibility as central education concerns at Brown University. The Center is dedicated to expanding and strengthening active community involvement and the development of students' leadership abilities through direct service by helping students connect service and learning, and by encouraging partnerships between the university and local community. The Fund for Community Progress, Rhode Island's independent advocacy network, raises funds primarily through workplace giving to support its 26 grassroots agencies. Since 1982, these community-based and community-run social service and advocacy groups have shared a vision of equality and opportunity for all Rhode Islanders. The Fund also serves as the voice of progressive philanthropy within the statewide community. |
